Lasell College Donates Computers to Help Cancer Patients

Instead of tossing the old computers, the school found a worthwhile cause where the computers would be put to good use.

Have you ever set up a brand new PC or laptop and wondered what to do with the old one?

Earlier this month, Lasell College was faced with that exact question. The answer? Recycle Computers 4 Cancer.

The Newton-based college recently donated 70 computers to Recycle Computers 4 Cancer, a non-profit organization that provides computers to cancer patients, allowing them to stay in touch with loved ones, obtain medical information and work online.

According to a post on the Lasell College website, Lasell administrative assistant Emily Alter came up with the idea to donate the equipment after she donated her personal computer to the organization.

Without a formal program to recycle electronics, Lasell College would have likely paid to have the computer equipment removed, according to the post.

Recycle Computers 4 Cancer offers free equipment pick-up in addition to its drop-off center in Weymouth. Equipment that is not donated to patients is sold, with the proceeds supporting the non-profit's parent organization, the Scientific & Medical Coalition Against Cancer (SMCAC).

The non-profit serves Eastern Massachusetts as well as parts of Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
