Long-Time Newton Contractor Reportedly Shuttering Operations

The Boston Business Journal reports that Richard White Sons is closing after more than a century in Newton.

It's been 107 years since Richard White Sons opened its doors in Newton. Now, the Boston Business Journal is reporting that the longtime general contractor is closing up shop just months after being awarded a major contract.

In November, Richard White Sons announced it had been awarded the contract to construct the Boston College High's Cadigan Hall, a 28,000-square-foot multidisciplinary facility housing a gymnasium, art and music spaces and lecture hall.

On Tuesday, however, the Boston Business Journal reported that Kenneth White, the company’s former business development director, had confirmed the firm “is in the process of winding down our business operations after 107 years.” He declined to elaborate on the advice of attorneys.

The Newton firm pulled out of the BC High project in April, the BBJ reported, and handed off the project to Consigli Construction Co. of Milford.

William Kemeza, president of BC High, told the BBJ that Richard White Sons simply said it wasn't in the company's best interest to continue the project and added that the transition to the new firm was "remarkably smooth."
