Newton 2023 Yard Waste Collection Begins In March

NEWTON, MA – Newton will begin yard waste collection March 27, city officials announced.

Yard waste, along with trash and recycling carts, must be at curbs no later than 7 a.m. on collection day.

Newton residents can also drop off yard waste at the Resource Recovery Center located at 115 Rumford Ave. Yard waste from commercial vehicles or contractors will not be accepted.

Residents are asked to place yard waste in paper yard waste bags or in a barrel not exceeding 50 gallons or 50 pounds.

City officials also ask residents not to rake leaves into the street – unless they are being collected by a landscaper – and to never push leaves into storm drains. Leaves blocking storm drains can cause flooding and create safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians, city officials said on their website.

The following are acceptable yard waste materials:

  • Grass Clippings
  • Leaves
  • Tree and Shrub Prunings
  • Wood Chips
  • Small Vegetable and Flower Plants
  • Other Vegetative Matter
  • Twigs and branches less than 4' long and 6" in diameter
  • Pumpkins

Newton city officials ask residents to use twine to tie branches and limbs in bundles that are less than 4’ long and 3’ in diameter.

The following are not acceptable yard waste materials:

  • Plastic Bags
  • Dirt
  • Sand
  • Rocks
  • Asphalt
  • Brick
  • Concrete

Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.
