Newton Begins Search For New Superintendent

NEWTON, MA — The City of Newton is beginning its search for a new Superintendent of the Newton Public Schools, Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said in an announcement Tuesday.

Superintendent David Fleishman retired as superintendent in June and Kathy Smith took his place as interim superintendent. However, the district is now searching for its permanent candidate and has selected an experienced firm, Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), to assist them.

The Newton School Committee is seeking volunteers to serve on the Superintendent Search Committee. Those interested in volunteering can apply here. Here are a few important pieces of information about serving on the Superintendent Search Committee:

  • The Committee will have representatives from NPS administration, NPS educators, NPS families, NPS students, and general members of the Newton community.
  • The Committee is charged with working with HYA to develop the profile of the new superintendent, vetting candidates, and selecting finalists.
  • The Committee requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours in meetings from October - February. Additional meeting time may be required. Participants will also be asked to read materials in advance of meetings.
  • Participants will be required to maintain strict confidentiality of all information discussed throughout the process.
  • Meetings will be held both in person and virtually; the meetings will be held sometime between the hours of 4:30-8:30 p.m.
  • The first meeting of the Search Committee is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

The School Committee is asking applicants to confirm that they are able to meet the required time commitment prior to applying for the position.

Those who are not selected to serve on the Committee or do not have the time available will still be given the opportunity to provide feedback and input on the selection of the next Superintendent, Fuller said. Stakeholder groups and surveys will allow residents to share their thoughts and ideas with the Newton School Committee in the coming months.
