NEWTON, MA — A 12-year-old boy riding an electric scooter was hit by car near the corner of Putnam and Winthrop streets Monday evening, according to police. He was taken to Children's Hospital, but it's not clear what kind of injuries he sustained. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the car, a 56-year-old Newton man, stayed at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with officials, who are still investigating, said Newton Police Spokesperson Lt. Bruce Apotheker.
No one has been charged and the boy's parents have been contacted.

The crash is a reminder to always wear helmets, said first responders.
"Given the amount of people out there on these things, it's not something that occurs all the time," said Apotheker. "But we always advise anyone on a scooter, bicycle, motorcycle inline skates, roller skates - whatever - always wear protective gear."
