Newton Police say a burglar pried open the back door of Peterson's Jewelry in Newton Centre Monday before smashing cases and making off with an unknown amount of jewelry.
According to Newton Police reports, officers responded to an alarm at Peterson's around 4:45 a.m. Monday. Upon arrival, officers found that a back door had been pried open, the bolt had been cut from the interior gate, and the interior door and two display cases had been smashed.
A responding K9 unit picked up a scent at the back door and tracked the scent east through the alley to Chesley Road, where it went cold, reports said.

Police say store security cameras captured images of a "heavy set male wearing a ski mask, a hoodie with the hood up and gloves." The footage shows the suspect smashing the interior door with a sledge hammer before breaking the two display cases and stuffing jewelry into a canvas bag. In all, it appears the suspect was in the store for about 60 seconds, according to police reports.
Behind Peterson's, police located two items from a wristwatch display as well as a Rolex watch along the path the K9, Dakota, tracked.
