Newton City Council Approves Riverside Project Plans
The property totals more than 100,000 square feet.

NEWTON, MA — The City Council approved updated plans for the large-scale residential and commercial development adjacent to the MBTA Green Line Riverside station during its latest meeting.
The approved plan includes 753 residential apartments in six buildings ranging from four to seven floors. Approximately 150 of the units will be designated as affordable. There will also be 20,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space and 1,110 parking spaces, including parking garage spots.
According to Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, the approval is a notable step forward in what has been a nearly 20-year process of plans considered for the site, which was previously the Indigo Hotel until its closure in 2021.

The Council's vote passed 22 to 2, with Julia Malakie and John Oliver voting against issuing a permit to Mark Development to undertake the project, which is now expected to break ground in 2028.
One clause in the approval calls for Mark Development to invest more than $8 million in the surrounding area or make the payments to the city.
