New Activity Center Launching In Newton

The facility is officially opening later this week.

NEWTON, MA — The city is cutting the ribbon on a brand new community recreation center in Newtonville later this week.

The Cooper Center for Active Learning will officially open its doors on Friday, Dec. 5. The new building at 345 Walnut St. is named after resident Audrey Cooper, who made many positive contributions to the city up until her death in 2021. Cooper was a driving force behind the opening of early childcare and after school programs of Family Access of Newton. In addition, she also served leadership roles in the Newton Free Library’s Board of Trustees, Newton Senior Center Steering Committee, and the Ward 3 Democratic Committee.

“This woman cared about everyone in our community. She was passionate about children and students,” Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said about Cooper. “This woman was gentle and kind and yet was one of the strongest and most determined people I’ll ever know. She was a positive, infectious force.”
