Newton Girl with Spina Bifida Drafted by College Hockey Team

Marianne Mahoney "joined" the Northeastern women's hockey team as part of a program run by Team IMPACT.

All eyes were on 14-year-old Marianne Mahoney when she rolled out in wheelchair at Northeastern University's Matthews Arena to sign letter of intent to join the women's ice hockey team.

Mahoney, a Newton resident who has spina bifida, was drafted onto the Huskies' women’s ice hockey team as a part of a program run by Team IMPACT, a Boston-based non-profit organization that matches children who face life-threatening and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams, according to an article in the Boston Globe.

Kelly Wallace, president of NU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and a forward on the team, said the team will make Mahoney feel as welcome, and look to her for inspiration.
