Newton To Host Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration Oct. 10
The family-friendly celebration will will feature music, dance, poetry, food, visual art, cultural presentations, and Indigenous vendors.
NEWTON, MA —Newton will host its Indigenous Peoples Day celebration for the second year in a row on Monday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Albemarle Field.
The family-friendly celebration will will feature music, dance, poetry, food, visual art, cultural presentations, and over 20 Indigenous vendors.
The event is organized by a committee of Indigenous residents who have a collective goal “to bring visibility and voice to Indigenous People in the City of Newton."

"Spend the whole day or drop by for a while,” the Indigenous Peoples Day Newton Committee said in a statement. "Learn about Indigenous dance, music and art. Catch up with old friends and meet new people. Shop the marketplace and enjoy some delicious Indigenous food.”
Newton’s celebration is sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Newton Cultural Council, The Harmony Foundation, NOPI, local businesses, and individual donations.

In 2020, Newton city councilors voted to change the name of the holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October from Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day due to Columbus’s treatment of Indigenous people.
