NEWTON, MA — The League of Women Voters of Newton has organized a political rally in honor of a former United States Congressman.

The LWV is inviting the community to City Hall on Thursday, July 17 at 6 p.m. on the east side of the building on 1000 Commonwealth Ave. The event is part of the nationally recognized “Good Trouble Lives On” in which the civil rights legacy of Congressman John Lewis is celebrated and continued. Lewis was a massive supporter and contributor to the civil rights movement in the 1960s. He died in 2020.

According to the LWV, the purpose of the rally is to “demand an end to the authoritarian attacks on our freedom to vote, protest, and organize — and to stand united against efforts to criminalize our communities, roll back our rights, and slash vital public programs.”
