NEWTON, MA — A company that owns and operates numerous assisted living facilities throughout the country is closing its Newton-based corporate headquarters later this fall.

AlerisLife is the parent company of Five Star Senior Living, and is closing its office on 255 Washington St. in early November, resulting in a large employee layoff.

The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act with the state on Wednesday, Sept. 3, signifying that 179 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the four stores closing. The layoff period will reportedly span from Monday, Nov. 3, through the end of the calendar year.
