The Lines That Divide Us: Newton Street Paint Debate Continues
One resident was detained for attempting to repaint the street back to its original colors.
NEWTON, MA — A resident will be summonsed to court after attempting to spray paint street lines on Adams Street, according to a report from NBC 10 Boston.
The 54-year-old man was detained for trying to paint the street during the city’s Festa event. The street’s lane-dividing lanes are painted red, green, and white for the Nonatum Village’s Italian heritage.
The design was reportedly removed in the middle of the night on Thursday, June 26. Residents have since voiced their displeasure with the change. Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said she had to have the lane dividers replaced with standard yellow in order to follow state law ahead of Festa.

Fuller said the design will be reinstated in a relatively short period of time, however they will be located away from the center of the road and the yellow lines will remain. Resident Mike Callahan has started a petition to have the lines returned to their original position that has garnered more than 1,000 signatures.
