Partial Garage Collapse In Newton Centre Makes Parking Tricky
While plows were clearing the top floor of a garage at the office park in Newton Centre they found a significant hole.
NEWTON, MA — Monday night as plows were clearing a parking deck for the buildings on Centre Street in Newton Centre the plow drivers reported part of the top deck crumbled, leaving a hole large enough for a person laying down to roll into - not that they would.
Crews from the city responded and someone placed red tape blocking off the parking deck so workers could come and make a repair. But that meant Monday the space that usually houses some 100 parking spaces was out of commission, making parking tricky in Newton Centre.
According to those close to the event, there were very few cars in the garage at the time of the partial collapse, so there were no injuries reported. By 4:30 p.m. two heavy plates were placed over the hole, and markers were set up to alert traffic to go around the area, once it reopens.

The crumbling material did knock down a pipe to the sprinkler system, however. So crews were working into the evening to fix that.
Offices nearby sent notes to employees letting them know they could either find parking down the street or work from home. A number chose to work from home.

An employee at the building told Patch the garage was deemed structurally OK, and was expected to be open Wednesday.
A building inspector did not immediately return request for comment Tuesday afternoon.
The top level of the two level garage fits about 50 parking spaces.
