Postponed: Community Meeting on Carr School Renovation [Updated]

Residents interested in the future Carr School renovation are invited to attend a community meeting on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m.

The meeting, which will be held at the Carr School (Newton Cultural Center), was initially planned for this Thursday, Feb. 28. However, according to an email from Board of Aldermen President Scott Lennon, the meeting has been postponed to March 13. 

As the Newton School Department moves forward with the rebuilding of Angier Elementary School, it is also moving forward with the renovation of Carr, which will act as a "swing space" for Angier students while their school is under construction.

The Carr School project will include the renovation of 20 classrooms as well as space for art, music and special education. The project will also make sure the school meets all accessibility requirements and has updated security access control for the front and rear of the school, according to documents posted on the city's website.

Windows will also be replaced at Carr and sustainable building systems will be installed, including water-conserving plumbing fixtures and high-efficiency boilers.

The city's fiscal 2014-2018 Capital Improvement Plan estimates the total Carr project cost at $12.7 million. 

The city is set to go out to bid for construction documents on the Carr School project at the end of March. Bidding will take place in May, followed by the start of construction in July. Students will move in to the renovated space by September 2014, when Angier construction is supposed to start.
