The Newton Fire Department believes that unattended cooking is to blame for a late-night fire that damaged a Chestnut Hill home's kitchen. According to a press release from the Newton Fire Department, firefighters were called to 480 Dudley Road at 11:43 p.m. Saturday. Crews arrived to find a kitchen fire in a one-story ranch-style home. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the kitchen area, but spent the next three-plus hours overhauling the home, checking for hidden fire pockets by opening walls and ceilings. No firefighters or civilians were injured, but the initial damage estimate came in at $80,000, according to the press release.
