  • This Day in History: In 1789, Georgetown College was established in Washington, D.C., as the first Catholic college in the nation. In 1845, Congress decided all national elections would be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. In 1907, Charles Curtis of Kansas began serving as the first Native American U.S. Senator. In 1964, the 24th Amendment to the Constitution was completed, eliminating the poll tax in federal elections.
