Tractor-Trailer Rollover Causes 10-Hour Cleanup On Peabody Onramp

The Peabody Fire Department said the tractor-trailer, which crashed about 11 a.m., was finally righted after 9 p.m. on Thursday.

PEABODY, MA — A tractor-trailer rollover that blocked a Route 128 onramp in Peabody throughout Thursday and briefly closed lanes on the highway was righted after emergency responders and crews worked the scene for more than 10 hours on Thursday.

The Peabody Fire Department said it was about 9:12 p.m. when the truck, which crashed around 11 a.m., was finally righted and could be removed.

"It's been a long day for our companies working the scene on the Route 128 South onramp," the Peabody Fire Department said. "Thank you to all those who are assisting us on scene and in the city."

HAZMAT techs from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services were among those at the scene because of "various substances that must be safely removed from the vehicle." Peabody fire said that the material was successfully offloaded early in the evening and then began the "two-hour process of righting the tractor-trailer and towing it from the scene."

The Massachusetts State Police said on Thursday that minor injuries were suffered in the crash.

The crash occurred on the southbound onramp from Centennial Drive and Forest Street in Peabody. The ramp was closed along with the right travel lane for about an hour after the crash with State Police saying early in the afternoon that the ramp was expected to remain shut down for hours longer for clean up and to remove the truck.

Traffic was jammed back to Endicott Street in Danvers for hours during the afternoon.
