Kingston Woman Killed In Fire After Dropping Lit Candle: DA

KINGSTON, MA — A woman died in a fire in Kingston after dropping a lit candle over the weekend, officials said.

The Kingston Fire Department responded to the scene on South Street after receiving a 911 call around 3 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters say they found her severely injured after she dropped a candle and lit her clothes on fire.

The woman whose name has not yet been released later died from her injuries, according to a joint press release from Kingston Fire Chief Mark Douglass, Kingston Police Chief Maurice Splaine, State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey, and Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.

"I'd like to express the deepest condolences of the Kingston Fire Department to the victim's family," Kingston Fire Chief Mark Douglass said in a statement. "Remember that even a small flame can pose a fire and burn hazard."

Officials are urging residents to be cautious when around candles or stoves. "Remember that even a small flame can pose a fire and burn hazard. Always place a candle in a sturdy candle holder or nonflammable saucer on a solid, steady surface before you light it," Douglass said. "Keep anything that can burn at least one foot away on all sides, and extinguish the flame before leaving the room or going to sleep."
