Marion Police Warn Residents Of Black Bear Sighting Near Wareham

A black bear has found it's way east of 495, and has been spotted on the Wareham/Marion line.

MARION, MA — A black bear has been spotted on Country Road at the Wareham/Marion line, police say.

Marion police warn residents not to try to approach the bear, they say if you do come into close contact to try to remain calm, moving away slowly and sideways.

Bird feeders and open trash can attract bears, so police urge residents to bring them inside if possible.

Police are also warning residents to keep dogs leashed up and to never let dogs chase or interact with bears.

This recent sighting comes months after "Boo Bear" a Facebook sensation across the South Shore was found dead after being hit by a medical transport vehicle in Marion back in July.

According to MassWildlife, black bears live and breed in Worcester County, northern Middlesex County, and west to the Berkshires. Dispersing young bears and wandering males have more recently found themselves east of Route 495.
