'Run for 1' for Marathon Victims

Plymouth Schools, Police, Fire, and DPW are sponsoring a 5k race to support Boston's One Fund and raise money for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Everyone else uses Plymouth as a location for 5ks and funraising walks, so why can't the town do it, too?

That could have been part of the thinking when town and school officials decided to create the "Run for 1," a 5k race and walk to support Boston's One Fund. The race and walk is being sponsored by the Plymouth Public Schools, Police and Fire, and the Department of Public Works.

School Superintendent Gary Maestas, Police Chief Michael Botieri, and Town Manager Melissa Arrighi are asking residents and businesses to support the race by volunteering as support staff or by running. It's a great way for people looking for ways to support victims of the Boston Marathon bombings to help.

"In situations like these, you feel powerless. That’s what acts of terror do," Maestas said. "Having shared that sentiment with several other town departments, we came up with this idea for a race/walk to give the people of Plymouth to do more than grieve but to really help the victims of the bombing."

The Run for 1 will take place at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 25 starting at Pilgrim Memorial Park on the waterfront.
