Town Meeting Narrowly Approves Security System
Town Meeting approved a $597,500 appropriation for a security system for town buildings.
It took a roll call vote and a margin of just 11 members, but Town Meeting approved a security system for Plymouth town buildings, including the Plymouth Public Schools.
The vote of 68 in favor and 57 opposed secured $597,500 from the General Fund Free Cash, at Fall Town Meeting on Saturday, Oct. 19.
A motion from Town Meeting Member Randolph Parker to reduce the appropriation to $300,000 was ultimately defeated.
The funds will cover cameras and alert systems for facilities that are most heavily occupied, according to Police Captain John Rogers.
The new security system would allow dispatchers and police to know if there was a threat before a 911 response. The cameras would also help police pinpoint a suspect's location in the event of an emergency.
"We believe this is a public safety necessity," Rogers said of the article.
Discussion of securing the schools was high during the debate. Superintendent Dr. Gary Maestas commented he did not believe $300,000 would cover the school's needs.
