Whale Watch Season Back! New Head Naturalist on Board

New England Aquarium & BHCC Launch Whale Watch Season with Marine Biologist Linnea Mayfield as Head Naturalist

The New England Aquarium and Boston Harbor City Cruises (BHCC) announced the launch of their joint whale watch season today. Starting May 16, 2024, the cruises will offer passengers an opportunity to see whales and other marine life up close in the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary.

The cruises feature expert naturalists from the New England Aquarium who will educate passengers about the whales, dolphins, and birds they encounter. This year, Linnea Mayfield, a marine biologist with seven years of experience at BHCC, takes the helm as Head Naturalist.

"I'm excited to get back out there and share my passion for these amazing creatures," said Mayfield. "Whales are incredible animals, and I love helping people learn about them."

The whale watch cruises depart from Boston's Central Wharf and last three to four hours. The high-speed catamarans offer both indoor and outdoor viewing areas, with a full bar and light snacks available for purchase. BHCC has also implemented measures to reduce single-use plastics on board.

"The start of whale watch season is a highlight of the year," said Bob Lawler, BHCC's General Manager. "We're thrilled to continue this partnership with the New England Aquarium and provide people with a chance to see whales in their natural habitat."

The press release highlights the shared commitment of the Aquarium and BHCC to protecting marine life, including the endangered North Atlantic right whale. The delayed start of the season allows for the whales to safely migrate out of Cape Cod Bay before the cruises begin.
