Garage, Train Platform to Open Friday

A week before Halloween, Salem's new parking garage and train platform will open.

The new parking garage and train platform at the Salem commuter rail station will open a week before the station’s busiest night of the year - Halloween.

City officials announced on the “Building Salem” Facebook page that the new station, platform and garage will all open on Friday, Oct. 24. An opening date of Oct. 1 had previously been mentioned.

The $37 million project broke ground in summer 2013. The garage has five levels with 714 parking spaces and the new station has a high-level platform with a lobby and two elevators. There will also be a bus platform, taxi lane and kiss-and-ride drop-off and pick-up area, according to the MBTA. A new pedestrian bridge will connect the Bridge Street sidewalk to the elevators and stairs to the platform.
