Grand Opening Event Planned for New T Garage, Station

The new Salem Intermodal Facility at the Salem MBTA commuter rail station will have a grand opening Monday.

The grand opening of the new parking garage at Salem commuter rail station - now officially called the Salem Intermodal Facility - will be Monday morning.

MBTA General Manager Dr. Beverly Scott, Salem Mayor Kimberly Driscoll and U.S. Rep. John Tierney (D-Salem) are all scheduled to join other local officials at the 10 a.m. event on Monday, Nov. 17.

The final touches are still being added at the new facility, which includes a 700-car parking garage plus bus, bike and Zipcar facilities and a new pedestrian walkway connecting to Bridge Street.

Salem station is the third busiest station on the MBTA’s commuter rail network.

The garage opened the Friday before Halloween - just in time for the final week of the Haunted Happenings festivities.

While the garage is open, the elevator is operational and the new high platform is in use, the T said Friday that work will continue on the project through the winter and spring of 2015.
