Guide Dog Allegedly Jumps on Table

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police log from Sunday through Monday afternoon. Among calls police responded to were a stolen bicycle and a man with a guide dog in a restaurant.Â
- At 4:03 p.m. Sunday, a Buffum Street resident reported his bicycle was stolen sometime over the winter. Since that time, the resident reported seeing a juvenile in the neighborhood riding the bike. Police checked the serial number on the bike and it was found the bike did belong to the resident. The bike was returned to its proper owner.
- At 4:39 p.m. Sunday, a resident of Heritage Drive reported a tire was slashed overnight.
- Police found a hypodermic needle at 4:46 p.m. Sunday on Lafayette Street.
- Police responded to a Highland Avenue supermarket at 6 p.m. Sunday after a shopper found a car had been broken into. The shopper told police she left her car unlocked and a bottle of Vicodin was taken.
- At 6:37 p.m. Sunday, police responded to O'Neils on Washington Street for a report of a  person with a dog in the restaurant. Police were told the dog had jumped up on a table. The dog owner told police the dog is a 9-month-old Weimaraner named Sarah. The owner told police Sarah is a guide dog, but police noticed the dog had no tags or collar on. Police called Animal Control Officer Don Famico who confirmed the dog was licensed and a guide dog. Police told the owner he had to keep Sarah under control in the restaurant.Â
- At 7 p.m. Sunday, police were called to Collins Cover for a report of kids lighting grass on fire at the beach. When police arrived they found the kids burning a Christmas tree. The fire was extinguished.
- Police responded to a Boston Street store at 1:37 a.m. Monday after a store owner said a man walked in and asked to purchase two vanilla cigarillos. While the owner rang in the items, the man took off without paying. The man told police he saw the man get into a Toyota Tercel. Police later caught up with the man on Lafayette Street.Â
- At 3:05 a.m. Monday, police responded to 183 Loring Ave., where they found a car into the front stairway of the building. Airbags were deployed and the car was totaled, police said. Police said the car was traveling too fast on the slick road prior to the accident. The car drove over a sidewalk, through a fence and across a lawn before coming to rest at the stairway. The driver was cited for speeding.
- Police responded to a Wharf Street business at 7:57 a.m. Monday after the owner found it had been broken into overnight. The front door had been pried open and a TV, computer, printer, merchandise and money were taken. Police are investigating.
- At 8:52 a.m. Monday, police were called to a Sargent Street residence for a domestic dispute. A man had poured two cups of hot coffee on his girlfriend and walked off. Police found the man on Dearborn Street and arrested Joseph William Duffy, 43, 68 School St., Salem, and charged him with two counts of domestic assault and battery.
- At 9:37 a.m. Monday, police went to Collins Cove for a man lying on the steps leading to the beach. The man had severe bruising on his face. Police asked him how he got the injuries and he would not cooperate. The man was placed in protective custody.
- Several cars were towed on Broadway, Canal, Jefferson and North streets so the DPW could perform
- Police responded to Harbor Street at noon Monday after a resident found a back  door had been taken off its hinges and the home had been broken into. Money orders and jewelry were taken. Police are investigating.
- At 12:21 p.m. a Fort Avenue man reported bottles and can had been stolen from his recycle bin that was in his garage. Police will warn the numerous can collectors not to trespass.Â
- At 1:08 p.m., police moved along a truck selling steaks out of the back of his car on Rainbow Terrace.Â
- At 2:05 p.m., police went to a Canal Street business where a person was yelling at employees. The person was gone when police arrived.
