North Shore Business Close in Support of 'A Day Without Women'
In an effort to show economic solidarity, some North Shore businesses closed Wednesday.

NORTH SHORE, MA – In Salem, a day without women has fewer waffles. The Ugly Mug Diner was among those closing in observance of A Day Without Women on Wednesday. In a post announcing their decision, the diner said it would stand with women in a demonstration of economic solidarity.
"Even more important than the symbolism of standing with women on March 8, we are asking all employers to perform an audit of their policies impacting women and families," said the post.

A Day Without Women is an offshoot of the Women's March, and is meant to draw attention to women's socio-economic contributions to society. Women were encouraged to participate either by not working, not spending money except at small, women-owned businesses, or by wearing red on March 8, International Women's Day.
Plum Consignment in Beverly, owned and run by a local woman, was among those businesses closed on Wednesday in observance of A Day Without Women.

The Naumkeag Ordinary in Salem is also closed Wednesday, March 8, in an effort to reflect, observe, and question, according to a Facebook post announcing the closing.
Jodi Bee Bakes of Salem announced their one-day closing in a Facebook post that also said their staff would be paid for the day.
"On a typical Wednesday, we have five women working hard to make the bakery run," read the post before detailing what it takes to keep the business running, including naming the male and female staff members. "But on March 8th my staff will have the day off with pay because as a woman, as a business owner and as an employer, I stand by them and our collective rights."
