Salem Seeks Young Creative As Witch City's First Youth Literary Ambassador
The youth poet laureate will represent Salem's young creatives at city events and share an original work at the mayoral inauguration.
SALEM, MA — Salem young creatives are encouraged to become the Witch City's first youth poet laureate as part of a program designed to give students a platform to inspire, engage and connect with the community.
"The Youth Poet Laureate program gives young people in Salem a platform to share their voices, their stories, and their vision for our community," Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo said.
Applications will be open from Sept. 8 and must be submitted by Oct. 27. Interested candidates can apply through the city's website.

The Youth Poet Laureate will serve a one-year term beginning in January 2026. During this time, they will be mentored by Salem's Poet Laureate, participate in civic and cultural events, and contribute to initiatives that celebrate the diversity and creativity of the Salem community.
As part of their role, the Youth Poet Laureate will present an original commemorative poem at the State of the City and Inauguration on Jan. 6, 2026, and receive an $800 honorarium at the end of their term in 2026.

Eligibility Criteria & Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be between the ages of 13–18.
- Must be a current resident of Salem and plan to reside in Salem during the length of their term.
- Must have experience writing poetry and a strong desire to write and share original work during the year-long term.
- Must be available for the State of the City and Inauguration on January 6, 2026.
Application Requirements:
- Applicants must submit the following through the online application form:
- Four (4) examples of original poetry (no more than one page each).
- One (1) original commemorative poem celebrating Salem’s history, which, if selected, will be read at the State of the City.
- Statement of Interest (maximum 350 words).
- Two letters of recommendation, with at least one from an academic source.
- Proof of Salem residency.
