Salem Student Wins NSCC Award

Richard Julien of Salem was recognized for his contributions to the college's film club.

SALEM, MA – Richard Julien, of Salem, received the Thomas Bourke Helping Hands Award at North Shore Community College’s 51st annual Student Service Awards Ceremony. This annual award honors a student who generously and unconditionally gives time to support and enhance the College community.

The award is named for retired Dean of Students Thomas Bourke who, throughout his 27 years at NSCC, was a staunch supporter and advocate who devoted much of his professional career to the growth and expansion of the college.

Julien was recognized for his outstanding contribution to NSCC’s Film Club, which was struggling with fluctuating membership before Julien joined. "Richard expressed the utmost confidence that the film club could in fact become a major cultural force on our campus," said Film Club advisor, John Zamparelli.

Julien spearheaded an all-out effort to promote the Film Club and increase membership – creating and distributing flyers, setting up information tables, spreading the word around campus. Slowly but surely, he attracted like-minded students and membership began to grow.

Through Julien’s efforts, the Film Club now enjoys a robust membership and has taken on new initiatives, such as a weekly film screening for students with free popcorn.
