New Bedford Man Arrested In Virginia After Shooting 23-Year-Old

After fleeing the state, Alfonso Richards, 59 of New Bedford, is in custody in connection to the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man Monday.

NEW BEDFORD, MA — A 59-year-old New Bedford man was arrested in Virginia Tuesday morning in connection with a fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Monday afternoon.

New Bedford police found Naurik Michel-Brown, 23 of New Bedford on the ground after responding to reports of shots fired near Ashley Boulevard in New Bedford Monday afternoon.

Lieutenant Scott Carola later confirmed Michel-Brown died from his injuries at St. Luke's Hospital.

Police issued a warrant for Alfonso Richards, 59 Monday night, but were told there was a chance he fled the state, the Bristol County District Attorney's office said.

Massachusetts State Police sent out a 'Be On the Lookout' alert across multiple states, and Richards was arrested on a highway stop in Virginia Tuesday morning.

The District Attorney said an arrest warrant lodged Monday night involved a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, but the charge is expected to be upgraded to murder.

Massachusetts State Police Detectives, New Bedford police, and the District Attorney's office are actively investigating this as a homicide.
