Seekonk Burglary Suspect Killed In Shootout Identified

The state examiner's office Monday released the name of a New Hampshire man authorities say was killed after firing an AK-47 at police.

SEEKONK, MA — A suspected burglar killed by police after allegedly shooting at them with an AK-47 has been identified.

The man, who was shot three times by police Sunday morning in Seekonk, was identified Monday afternoon as Jeffrey W. Groulx, 47, of New Hampshire, according to the Bristol County District Attorneys’ Office.

A state medical examiner determined Monday that Groulx was shot three times, and one of the wounds was fatal, NECN reported.

Groulx allegedly broke into a business on Route 6 in Seekonk just before 6:40 a.m. Sunday, according to a Bristol County DA news release. Officers arrived on-scene and found Groulx, who matched a description of the suspect, in the parking lot of a nearby business, before he fled east in a black Honda.

Authorities say Groulx lost control of the car near the intersection of School Street and Route 6, and his car hit a curb and rolled off the side of the road. When two Seekonk officers arrived at the scene of the crash, the DA’s office says that Groulx shot at them with a 7.62-mm AK-47 rifle. Officers returned fire, then took up a defensive position and called the regional SWAT team.

The Bristol County DA tweeted that the suspect was found dead at the scene.

SWAT officers arrived and determined that Groulx no longer posed a threat, according to the DA. SWAT officers gained access to Groulx’s car by cutting open the roof.

The area around Route 6 and School Street, from Primrose Drive to Warren Avenue, was closed to public traffic for most of Sunday, according to WCVB. The event remains under active investigation as of Monday.
