SHREWSBURY, MA — The 2024 presidential race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be the marquee race this November, but voters in Massachusetts will also be voting to elect (or re-elect) state House and Senate candidates.

But 2024 will be a relatively sleepy year for state legislative races. Just 40 state representatives and 11 senators are facing challengers this year, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth — including local lawmakers.

In the Shrewsbury area, those unchallenged candidates include Republican state Rep. Hannah Kane of the 11th Worcester District and Democratic state Sen. Michael Moore.

In the 12th Worcester District, Democrat Meg Kilcoyne is running unopposed, ditto for Republican David Muradian Jr. in the 9th Worcester District. Across Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester's larger legislative delegation will only feature one contested race for a Senate seat.

First term state Rep. Kate Donaghue, D-Westborough, however, will face a challenge from Boyd Conklin, a Westborough resident who has previously run for office in that town. He's running as an unenrolled candidate.

Although the candidate filing deadline passed on Tuesday, candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday to withdraw from the 2024 election.
