Fatal Shrewsbury Hit-And-Run: Local Driver Charged

A 20-year-old woman died along Route 9 Saturday. The driver was arrested after he was seen in Westborough.

SHREWSBURY, MA — A 24-year-old man is facing multiple charges over his involvement in a fatal hit-and-run along Route 9 in Shrewsbury over the weekend.

Ghufran Mutar, 20, was crossing Route 9 at South Street Saturday near 10 p.m. after leaving her job at CVS when she was hit. The driver fled the scene, but police were able to identify the Dodge SUV seen leaving the scene, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.

Mutar later died at UMass Memorial in Worcester.

On Halloween, Westborough police spotted the Dodge SUV driving through town with visible damage, according to the DA's office. Shrewsbury and state police later arrested driver Jerry Santiago Jr. in Southbridge on charges of leaving the scene of personal injury resulting in death and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Santiago was set to be arraigned at Westborough District Court Wednesday.
