Health Inspections: Shrewsbury Fast Food Restaurants

The following health inspection reports were submitted by Board of Health inspectors.

Editor's Note: the following statements are from the most recent health inspection reports for the following businesses. The date of each inspection is indicated next to the business name.

Walk-in freezer fan is dusty and must be cleaned, floor must be swept under shelving and emergency handle must be replaced. Walk-in cooler has uncovered food including lettuce and cheese, ceiling and walls are dusty, floors must be cleaned, creamery and all other foods must be 6 inches off the floor and cheese or any other food not in original packaging must be labeled and dated. Dirty pans mixed in with clean pans on shelf outside freezer. Broken tiles noted on top of steps, and in corner creating difficult cleaning, also damage noted on ceiling tiles. Ice bucket for drive-thru window must be kept closed and cleaned to prevent spilled soda from entering. Floor under the fryolater must be swept and mopped daily to prevent grease buildup. Ceiling leak in upstairs storage room must be repaired to prevent further damage to wall and ceiling, walls must be repaired in storage room. Permanent repairs must be made to temporary wall repairs in both restrooms. Dumpster outside must be kept close at all times, drive-thru height sign must be repaired or removed. It was also noted that employees needed training on anti-choking procedures and allergen awareness. “The building is old and being maintained, but more attention to detail is needed.” Ice Machine maintained very well “great job”

Hand wash facilities must be protected from contamination. Very clean and well maintained, bathrooms are up to code, staff are all using proper hair restraints and wearing gloves, all food is labeled and dated “excellent,” hood vents are free from grease, ice machine is very well maintained. Please make sure the caps around the spigots are kept clean to prevent sticky syrup residue, paper towels need to be replaced in the hand wash station.

Employees need training with anti-choking procedures and allergen awareness; hand wash facilities need to be protected from contamination. Dumpster must be kept closed at all times, allergen sign must be placed in more visible location. Coffee must not be stored on hand wash sink because it makes sink inaccessible. Reach-in cooler must be kept cleaned and sanitized; a thermometer must also be present. Hot chocolate machine must be cleaned and sanitized, floors must be cleaned more frequently. Dry storage, walk-in cooler, walk-in freezer and ice machine all good.

Dunkin’ Donuts, 866 Hartford Trnpk., July 6, 2012. Mop in backroom must be hung up to ensure proper drying, mop also must be cleaned regularly. Frosting and cookie crumbs must be covered when not in use, all old products must be disposed of each shift, thermometer needed in walk-in cooler. Visible thermometers needed in seating area cooler and reach-in cooler near drive-thru. Sanitizing solution tested too weak in some areas, too strong in others; must be checked throughout the day. Ice Machine and dry storage area are good. Dining room is clean.

Dunkin’ Donuts, 118 Boston Trnpk., Dec. 12, 2011. New door sweep required in rear entrance, comet was found over coolatta base, all chemicals must be stored away from food. Great job using signage, all coolers at proper temperatures.

Employees must be trained in anti-choking procedures. Soda machine covers must be cleaned and sanitized, vent must be cleaned. Dry storage well organized, walk-in cooler well organized, cleaning sinks kept clean, fryolater and grill kept clean, everything labeled in reach-in cooler.

Microwave must be cleaned inside and out, walk-in freezer needs to be repaired as floor has large ice buildup, all food in walk-ins must be covered for protection. Ice machine must be cleaned and sanitized immediately; rusty screws must be replaced. Broken ceiling tiles must be replaced. Soda machine nozzles should be soaked in sanitizer overnight, freezer door does not close properly, must be repaired to ensure temperature regulation. Floor must be swept and mopped properly to prevent infestation by pests.  Hood vents should be repaired; missing parts. All trash should be removed from the store during closing shift.  “A general cleaning of the kitchen is needed, walls, floors and equipment. The restaurant has only been open an hour and it looks like you’ve been coking all day." Dining room soda machine is well maintained, all bathrooms are clean and up to code.

. Door needs to be repaired on parfait cooler, ice machine needs to be repaired for leaks, thermometers needed in reach-in coolers. No personal food can be left on food preparation tables. Floors in-walk in freezer need to be cleaned and food needs to be on shelves, dishwasher not working at proper temperature and must be repaired. Serve safe and allergen awareness certificates present labeled and dated “good job,” Equipment noted as very clean along with floors, walls and ceiling. Dry storage very clean and organized, chemicals are kept separate, restrooms are clean and contain proper hand washing signs, dining area clean.

. Ice machine in back must be emptied and cleaned, separate scoops must be used for spices and rices to prevent cross contamination. Floor near walk-ins have several missing/broken tiles. Buildup found behind shelves in dry-storage area. Dessert cooler running at 60 degrees, plug malfunction noted. Ceiling tiles are chipped and vents are dusty. Queso must be cleaned off ceiling near preparation area, shelves must be cleaned. Walk-in cooler good, food temperatures on preparation line are good, soda machine is clean, restrooms are great,. “Generally not bad, a little more attention to details would be great.”

CO2 containers must be tied off to prevent tipping; possibly explosion hazard.  Mop must be hung up after use to ensure proper drying. Hand sink is not to be used for storage of sugar packets. Reach-in cooler and freezer are good as are the service area soda machine and ice machine.
