Historic Edgemere Diner Hits The Road

The World War II-era Route 20 diner was driven away on Wednesday morning. It will end up in the Catskills.

SHREWSBURY, MA — The historic Edgemere Diner in Shrewsbury hit the road on Wednesday morning.

After being prepared for its future home in the Hudson Valley in New York on Tuesday, the truck was driven away from its longtime spot along Route 20 on Wednesday morning. O.B. Hill Trucking and Rigging will drive the World War II-era diner to New York.

The diner was sold at auction last year. The new owner is Michael Cioffi, who operates the Phoenicia Diner near Woodstock, N.Y. Cioffi, who paid $45,000 for the Edgemere, plans to restore the diner car and reopen it.

The Edgemere was a product of the New Jersey-based Fodero Dining Car Company. The company manufactured diner cars between 1933 and 1981, but is best known for its 1940s and 50s art deco creations.
