Route 20 Overhaul Project Gets $15.4 Million In Funding

The MassDOT project will redo the Route 20 and Route 9 intersection, and add pedestrian upgrades.

SHREWSBURY, MA — Local officials announced a milestone in a road project that will renovate a major local intersection.

MassDOT said Wednesday it has secured $15.4 million to renovate the intersection of Route 20 and Route 9 in Shrewsbury.

"The proposed project will standardize the cross-section on Route 20 between Route 9 and the South Street-Green Street intersection, add turn lanes, and provide safer intersection controls such as modern roundabouts," MassDOT said this week. "In addition, sidewalks and shared-use paths with grass buffers will also be included throughout the project to address the lack of multi-modal transportation options in this immediate area."

Even with funding in place, MassDOT has estimated the project may not begin until early 2026.
