SHREWSBURY, MA — Saint John's High School has hired alumnus John Vassar as the school's new varsity football coach, and as the school's first ever director of community outreach and partnerships.

Vassar, who is from Worcester, was a standout football player at the school. After graduating in 2011, he continued his football career at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and went on to coach at Doherty and Saint Paul’s schools in Worcester. He joined the Saint John's football coaching staff last year.

"The Saint John's community is a major piece of the foundation that made me who I am today. It's an honor to be able to bring it all home and give it back to our young men. It takes a village to raise a child," Vassar said in a news release. "I look forward to doing my part in strengthening and growing our village both on and off the football field."

Vassar will take over for football coach John Andreoli, who announced late last year he would step down after nearly 20 years at the helm of the football program.

Vassar will take over as football coach immediately, and will start in July as the director of community outreach and partnerships working with prospective students, local businesses and alumni.

"As Saint John’s enters its 125th year, our strategic focus will, in part, be to add new and exciting ways to share the Saint John’s story with the community. I have no doubt that John will be a great ambassador for us both on and off the field," school headmaster Alex Zequeira said in a news release.
