Community Mourns Jordan Pond Shooting Victim, Remembered As A 'Friend To All'

Kevin Doherty was fatally shot near Jordan Pond on Thursday.

SHREWSBURY, MA — The Shrewsbury father who was killed near Jordan Pond last week is being mourned by the community.

Kevin Doherty was walking back from taking his 6-year-old son to school when he was fatally shot on Thursday. He was 56. Doherty is being remembered as "a man of many joys," who loved music, golf and hockey, according to his obituary.

"Known for his giving spirit, he was a friend to all and truly the life of every gathering—bringing laughter and chatter wherever he went," his obituary reads.

Visitation hours will be held on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, and a funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Saint George Church.

The community is also organizing a fundraising event and vigil for Kevin Doherty on Oct. 11, according to a Facebook post. The event will take place at SAC Park in Shrewsbury from 2 to 8 p.m. All funds will go to Doherty's family.

On Thursday morning, Doherty was walking back from Calvin Coolidge Elementary School when he saw a man spray painting graffiti on a bridge, according to officials. Doherty took photos of the man spraypainting, and an altercation broke out.

Doherty called the police, but by the time officers arrived, Doherty had several gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he died, according to officials.

Following the shooting, there was an hours-long police search for an “armed and dangerous suspect," which Shrewsbury police alerted the public to around 9 a.m.

Shortly before noon, officers surrounded a home on Edgewater Avenue, where the suspect was taken into custody. The house was said to have several messages spray-painted on it, like "Free Palestine" and "Black Lives Matter."

That man was identified by officials as Snehal A. Srivastava. He was charged with armed assault with intent to murder and carrying a firearm without a license.
