Shrewsbury Will Mark Juneteenth During Summer Market
Juneteenth — which falls on June 19 — is now a federal holiday. Here's what Shrewsbury has planned to mark the holiday.
SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury will market Juneteenth in 2024 with an event at the town's weekly farmers' market.
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee will be at the Shrewsbury Summer Market on June 20 with information about the holiday, plus giveaways and crafts. The Shrewsbury summer market series happens each Thursday through Sept. 12 in the town hall parking lot from 3 to 7:30 p.m. (except July 4).
The June 19 national holiday commemorates the day in 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, when word finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas that the Civil War had ended, and they were free.

Also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day and Jubilee Day, Juneteenth is the oldest-known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation making it a federal holiday, the first since the addition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
