2 Somerville Residents Named Top Athletes In Boston Triathlon
Mohamad Alsabbagh won top male athlete in the Sprint Distance race and Emily Tato won top female athlete in the Olympic Distance race.
BROOKLINE, MA — Two Somerville residents were named top athletes in the 14th annual Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon, which took place at Carson Beach in South Boston over the weekend.
Mohamad Alsabbagh triumphed as top male athlete in the Sprint Distance race and Emily Tato won top female athlete in the Olympic Distance race. Other winners include Aaronn Gu of Brookline, who was named top male athlete in the Olympic Distance race, and Reia Tong of New York City, who was named top female athlete in the Sprint Distance race.
This year’s USA Triathlon-sanctioned event drew thousands of competitors and featured both the Olympic Distance and Sprint Distance races, along with the Boston Corporate Cup Competition and the annual Boston Tri Club Championship. The winner of the Corporate Cup was General Electric and the winner of the Tri Club Champions was Full Throttle.

“The Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon has become a signature summer event for the city, drawing high-level athletes and beginners alike to compete in a world-class event,” Michael O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon, said in a statement. “We’re proud to not only host this exciting competition, but also to partner with the city and state, Columbia Threadneedle Investments and Boston Medical Center, and our athlete supporters to make a positive impact on the community.”
As in years past, the event’s official charity partner was Boston Medical Center (BMC). Team BMC athletes raised funds to support Boston Medical Center’s work in health equity and address social determinants of health.

“We are so proud to join Boston Triathlon’s participants, event volunteers, and enthusiastic spectators to make this great event a success,” Leslie Walstrom, global head of marketing at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, said in a statement. “It’s a thrill to watch the exciting competition between athletes, and it’s an honor to support the local community through Team BMC fundraising and Boston’s Swim Safely program.”
