22-Unit Development At East End Grille Space Approved By Planning Board

The Planning Board approved the project in a unanimous decision Thursday night.

SOMERVILLE, MA – The Somerville Planning Board Thursday night approved a 22-unit development at the former East End Grille space on the corner of Broadway and Glen Street. The decision was unanimous and approved in under 30 minutes, according to Ward 1 Alderman Matt McLaughlin.

East End Grille, a restaurant and bar that fused upscale fare with classic pub food, closed in October after three years at 118 Broadway.

Public testimony was not allowed at Thursday's meeting ahead of the vote, though there were multiple community meetings in the months prior. McLaughlin, who opposed the project, slammed the process by which it was approved in a statement on Facebook.

McLaughlin took issue with several aspects of the project design, including its "L" shape possibly hindering future development on Broadway, and said he felt it was antithetical to the objectives of Somervision and the city's zoning.

The development includes two commercial storefronts and a parking area for about 20 vehicles.
