Maureen Bastardi, then Ward 1's representative on the Somerville School Committee, was appointed as Roche's replacement.
Assuming Bastardi decides to run this fall to keep her seat on the Board of Alderman, Ward 1 will likely join Ward 5 and Ward 7 as districts where sitting aldermen will face challengers.
As election season gets closer, more candidates may announce runs for office soon. With a primary expected to take place sometime in September—the exact date isn't officially set at the moment—candidates will likely pull nomination papers in May and submit signatures at the end of June.
