Goodbye Somerville Avenue Off-Ramp

Permanent traffic changes are being implemented on April 11.

SOMERVILLE, MA - The off-ramp from McGrath Highway southbound to Somerville Avenue will close permanently on Monday April 11. 

The ramp will be replaced by a signalized connection from Somerville Avenue and Medford Street to McGrath Highway northbound, officials said.

The existing tunnel from Somerville Avenue to Washington Street will be permanently closed.

Vehicles heading southbound on McGrath Highway to Somerville Street will be rerouted to the Washington Street off-ramp to Medford Street

Vehicles heading northbound to Medford Street will follow a new traffic pattern and new traffic signal at the Somerville Avenue and Medford Street intersection.

"This work is an interim improvement phase of the long term McGrath Boulevard Project. When fully complete in the summer of 2016, this interim measure will provide increased pedestrian and bicycle access at both the Washington [Street] and Somerville [Avenue] intersections with McGrath Highway Traffic signal upgrades will be made at Somerville Avenue" officials wrote in the announcement.
