ICYMI: Accidentally White-Only Tribute to Prince Canceled by Somerville Gallery

The Washington Street art space in Somerville pulled the plug on a Prince-themed art show upon noticing a troubling lack of diversity.

Wouldn’t it seem strange if a tribute special for Dave Chappelle featured white comedians exclusively?

A Washington Street art gallery in Somerville agrees that such a display would make for quite a head-scratcher. Hence its decision to call off a planned exhibit meant to honor Prince upon noticing every contribution came from a white person.

As was originally reported by Boston Magazine, “Dig If U Will a Picture” would’ve ran on Saturdays between June 6 and June 27 at the Gallery at Washington Street, and featured art inspired by His Royal Badness in a litany of different mediums.

However, reps from the Gallery say they might try to exhibit “Dig If U Will....” at a later date.

“We are grateful for dialogue around these issues and hope to revisit this show in the future when we are able to present it with a more diverse representation of artists,” said reps from the Gallery.
