ICYMI: Rat Sightings On The Decline In Somerville

A Boston Metro report says Somerville's anti-rat campaign appears to be paying off.

Measures taken by city officials over the last 18 months seem to have caused Somerville’s rodent population to plummet, according to a report from the Boston Metro.

The anti-rat campaign - which has included implementing rodent-resistant trash cans and upping the number of waste container licenses issued to local restaurants - has apparently reduced the number of rodent sightings thus far in 2015 by more than 33 percent, compared the the amount reported by May of 2014.

“We are cautiously optimistic that these numbers show that the cooperation of the community and the policies we adopted have reduced the rodent population in the city,” Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone told the Metro.
