Learners-Permit Driver Smashes BMW, Injures Two, Says Report

Four bystanders caught the driver and escorted him back to police, according to a police report.

A 21-year-old Malden man with a learners permit drove a BMW 80 miles per hour down Lowell Street, smashed into a Toyota Corolla, injured two people, then tried to flee the scene on foot, according to allegations in a Somerville police report.

The report says a police officer was parked near Lowell and Alpine streets at about 10:20 p.m. on Sunday—Mother's Day—when he heard an engine revving and then saw a car fly by at 80 miles per hour toward Magoun Square.

When the officer arrived on Medford Street, he saw the BMW had extensive front-end damage, and he also saw the Corolla, which had heavy rear-end damage and two injured occupants, according to the report.

As the officer got out of his cruiser, four men walked toward him escorting a fifth man, identified as Marcus DeMoura, the report says.

The men said they saw DeMaura crash the BMW, exit the car and run away on Medford Street, the report says. They allegedly caught him and brought him back.

DeMaura produced a learners permit told the officer his brakes had given out, according to the report.

He was arrested and charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, not being duly licensed and speeding.
