Man Charged In Shooting Near Somerville Convenience Store
Police: Devonte McCormick fired at two men after they hit him and chased him behind the convenience store following an apparent drug deal.
SOMERVILLE, MA — A Weymouth man is facing weapons and assault charges in connection with a shooting near a Somerville convenience store earlier this month.
Police said Devonte McCormick, 23, fired at two men in a parking lot next to the Central Convenience Store on Sept. 8. The men fled into separate waiting vehicles, and McCormick ran to a car waiting at the corner of Mystic Avenue and Temple Street, police said.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage leading up to the shooting to identify the targets. Video also showed McCormick being dropped off by a white Nissan Altima, the same car he fled to after firing the shots, police said.

McCormick fired at the men after conducting an apparent drug deal with one of them in the parking lot, according to the police report. The men approached McCormick and hit him in the head before chasing him behind the convenience store, police said.
"The two passengers run back into the vehicles as McCormick is observed running from the rear of Central Convenience," the police report states. "At this time, McCormick is observed pointing a black firearm at the two males and firing several rounds at the two vehicles which are now speeding away. This is the point McCormick runs to his awaiting white Altima at the corner of Temple Road and Mystic Avenue."

Police said the white Altima was registered to McCormick. Investigators contacted Weymouth police, who pulled him over around 6:30 p.m. that evening. McCormick was in the same clothes he was seen wearing on the surveillance video and asked the officer if he was being stopped because of "what had occurred in Somerville," police said.
McCormick told police he had a gun in a backpack in the backseat of his car, according to the police report. Police said he is not licensed to carry a firearm.
McCormick was arrested and charged with two counts of armed assault to murder and one count each of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and carrying a firearm with ammunition.
