Middlesex DA Marian Ryan Not Running For Attorney General
Ryan, said to be weighing a bid to succeed Maura Healey, will instead seek a third term as district attorney in Middlesex County.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA — Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan is out of the running for attorney general in Massachusetts.
The county's top prosecutor told the Boston Globe she is "different from many of her predecessors" – three of the last four district attorneys went on to become attorney general – and "this has been the work I've done my whole career."
"Immensely proud of our progress so far; from improving how justice is delivered to protecting the most vulnerable to creating best-in-class prevention programs to tackling - head on - issues of structural racism and bias-motivated conduct," Ryan wrote in a statement on Twitter. "But, there is so much more to do. I am a grateful steward of the Middlesex District Attorney’s office and serving alongside the office's professionals each day is a high honor. I look forward to sharing my vision for the future with you over the coming months."

Ryan, 67, was said to be weighing a bid for attorney general after Maura Healey announced her run for governor. It would have been a major domino to fall from Healey's candidacy, opening a district attorney seat in the biggest county in New England.
A Somerville native, Ryan was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick in 2013 and won her first election the following year. If she wins, it will be her third term as district attorney in Middlesex County.
