📰 News we're reading

1. Multi-billion Dollar Medical Technology Company Taking Up Permanent Somerville Residence (patch.com) — Somerville is set to become the global headquarters of TransMedics Group, bringing an estimated 900 jobs and $75 million in new tax revenue over the next decade. The company will occupy a massive Assembly Innovation Park facility, invest heavily in buildout, and contribute annually to Somerville schools, public safety, and STEM education programs, with operations targeted to start by early 2028.

2. Councilor McLaughlin says Kensington Connector is ‘dangerous and disgusting' (thesomervilletimes.com) — Somerville officials are pushing to finally fix the Kensington Connector under I-93, a grim underpass linking East Somerville and Assembly Square that residents say feels unsafe and unpleasant. After years of advocacy and MassDOT approval, councilors now want the city to move on lighting, art, and security upgrades to make the corridor safer and more inviting for people walking and biking.

3. PTAC provides feedback on MassDOT's McGrath Boulevard project (thesomervilletimes.com) — Somerville leaders and the city’s Pedestrian & Transit Advisory Committee are pressing MassDOT to tweak the McGrath Boulevard redesign to better protect local walkers, cyclists, and kids. From full signalization at Otis Street to lower speeds and wider sidewalks, councilors want a unified Somerville voice as this once-in-a-generation project moves toward a 2028 start.

4. Popular pub will be re-homed as part of revised Somerville redevelopment project (nbcboston.com) — A massive Davis Square redevelopment could relocate beloved spots The Burren and Dragon Pizza into a new 26‑story tower while adding more than 500 apartments, including some income-restricted units. Developers say the plan could revitalize Somerville’s Davis Square, but anonymous flyers and community pushback show the debate over the project’s scale and impact is far from settled.

5. VIDEO: Pressley Co-Chairs Hearing on Housing Affordability, Demands Congress Affirm Housing as a Human Right (house.gov) — A Somerville resident’s struggle to find affordable housing is front and center in Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s new push for federal action on the housing crisis. She highlights his story, along with recent federal funding for Somerville’s Clarendon Hill, while urging Congress to treat housing as a human right and expand support for renters and public housing nationwide.
