Red Line Expecting Dramatic Service Interruptions, Orange Line Bus Diversions Planned This Weekend

First, the Orange Line

Buses will replace Orange Line train service between Sullivan Square and Oak Grove on Saturday and Sunday, according to the MBTA website.

A similar bus diversion is also scheduled for the weekend of March 9 and 10.

What's more, the bus diversion will also be in effect Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 9 p.m. the MBTA says.

The MBTA is shutting down train service in order to conduct construction work on the new Assembly Square Station.

Now—breathe—the Red Line

The MBTA Board of Directors voted Wednesday to renovate the Longfellow Bridge, and that means the Red Line is expecting 25 weekends worth of bus diversions over the course of three years, according to the Boston Globe.

Construction work on the $255 million project begins this summer, the Globe reports, and the project is scheduled to be finished at the end of September in 2016.

Weekday Red Line train service will remain intact duding the three-year construction period, but it will also involve running on a temporary track over the Longfellow Bridge.

During weekend bus diversions, all northbound (outbound) traffic, including buses, will go over the Craigie Bridge near the Museum of Science, the Globe says. Southbound (inbound) traffic will travel in a special lane on the Longfellow Bridge.
